DEFY’NE DISCOVERS: {PARADISE TENDER- SHREYA JOSH $DEFY’NE DISCOVERS: {PARADISE TENDER- SHREYA JOSH} About the artist: Shreya Josh, who hails from New Delhi, India has been immersed in the world of art from a very young age, constantly drawing, painting, and doodling on any surface they could find. This passion for art has always been a central part of their life. With formal training in realistic drawing techniques from middle school and further technical skills honed in art college, they have always found the most joy in creating what many might call “childish” art, with its messy, irregular line work that breaks from conventional standards. At the age of 17, Shreya received their first tattoo in a commercial studio in their hometown of Delhi. This experience sparked a deeper interest in tattoo culture. While studying at an art college in Chicago, they discovered the stick and poke tattoo culture, a more personal and communal experience where friends would gather to create permanent marks on each other. This experience was transformative to them in realising that body art could be an intimate way to connect with oneself and others. By 2017, Shreya began promoting handpoke tattoos in India under the name “Tender Pokes, ,” driven by a desire to help people take agency over their own bodies and appreciate the art of hand-poked tattoos. Growing up with vitiligo, Shreya understands first hand how body art can be a powerful form of self-expression and acceptance. Discovering tattoos at 17 was a way for them to decide what kinds of marks they wanted on their skin, and later, finding DIY stick and poke tattoos allowed them to creatively embrace the vitiligo marks on their fingers, turning them into something they loved. At 26, Shreya explored yet another form of body art—adding tooth gems to decorate their teeth. For Shreya, and many around them, body art—whether through tattoos, tooth gems, piercings, or hair colouring—has been a way to reclaim agency over their own bodies, using art as a form of self-love and acceptance.
